DIRECTORS AND STAFF
Mitchell Way, Director
Mitchell Way received his Bachelors in Music Education from Tennessee Technological University and his Masters of Music from The American Band College of Sam Houston State University. He has had the privilege of studying music with famous conductors Paula Crider, Anthony Maiello, Peter Boonshaft, Past-President of the American Bandmasters Association Joseph Hermann, as well as instrumentalists and composers such as Jim Walker, Robert Spring, Eugene Rousseau, Frank Ticheli, Brian Balmages, and Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser.
Mr. Way taught band for three years in the greater Nashville, Tennessee area before moving to San Diego in 2007. Prior to this move he served as clinician at the Tennessee Valley Summer Music Festival, coaching chamber ensembles and teaching private saxophone. He has performed with the Tennessee Valley Winds and currently performs on alto saxophone and is a board member of the San Diego Winds, a non-profit ensemble comprised of professionals and music educators for the purpose of developing music education outreach programs in the greater San Diego area. Prior to Westview, Mr. Way taught band and orchestra at Grossmont High School for one year prior to serving as Director of Instrumental Music at Helix Charter High School for five years.
Martin Fierro, Associate Director
Martin Fierro currently serves as Associate Director of Instrumental Music at Westview High School where his responsibilities include teaching Marching Band, conducting two concert bands and orchestra. Prior to Westview High School Mr. Fierro completed his student teaching at Mount Carmel High School and served as Assistant Director of Instrumental Music at Point Loma High School.
Prior to becoming a teacher, Mr. Fierro gained extensive teaching experience serving as percussion instructor at Redwood High School, saxophone instructor at Mission Bay Montessori Academy and as a staff member for the San Diego Summer Music Institute. Martin has a Bachelor of Music Education from San Diego State University and a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music. Martin performs as a local freelance professional musician on both bassoon and saxophone.
As a teacher and performer, Martin aims to provide his students and audience with an enriching musical experience. Martin has studied saxophone with Dr. Todd Rewoldt and conducting with Dr. Shannon Kitelinger.
Skyler MacKinnon, Marching and Visual Staff
Skyler MacKinnon teaches visual and marching at Westview High School. An alumnus of the school from 2014, he is currently attending San Diego State University as a trombone performance and music education major. In addition to a busy career as a freelance trombonist, Skyler is entering his third year of marching with the Santa Clara Vanguard drum and bugle Corps, and he is also serving as the horn Sergeant at Alchemy Independent Winds. He aims to become a high school band director, hopefully at a program as illustrious as the one at Westview High School.
Rebecca Greenberg, Colorguard Designer
Rebecca Greenberg is entering her third year as Westview Gold's Colorguard Designer. Rebecca began her colorguard career marching 9 years with Capital Sound Drum and Bugle Corps. While marching, she found a passion for teaching and helping others catch up on choreography and technique. She has worked the past 20 years with many amazing marching bands, universities, and drum corps across the United States. Some include University of Wisconsin Whitewater, Shadow Armada Marching Band (Shadow Drum and Bugle Corps now), Waukesha West Marching Band, and The Birdville Mighty Hawk Band. In her free time, she loves spending time with her husband (Daniel), son (Miles), daughter (Ella), and two dogs (Maddox and Sawyer).
Ondrej Lewit, Violin Section Coach
Ondrej Lewit graduated at State Conservatory of Music (BA) Prague and at the Academy of Performing Arts-HAMU (MA) in Prague. He has served as concertmaster in many European Orchestras and has served as a violin teacher and chamber music coach at Santa Cruz Conservatory. In Southern California he has performed with California Consort and California Chamber Orchstra, Hutchins Consort, and Encore Trio. He is a current member of Quartetto Sorrento.
Alyze Dreilling, Viola Section Coach
Alyze Dreilling has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music - Violin Performance from Indiana University-Bloomington and an Masters of Fine Arts in Orchestral Performance from United States International University (now Alliant International University) in San Diego. She is part of the adjunct faculty at University of San Diego, a member and adjudicator for the Music Teachers' Association of California and a member of Music Teachers National Association and the National Piano Guild.
Bing Yan, Cello Section Coach
BIng Yan taught and studied cello performance at the conservatory under her father's instruction, and after receiving her Bachelor's degree, she was an assistant cello instructor in Tianjin Conservatory of Music for two years before she immigrated to America, where she received her Master of Fine Arts degree at the United States International University on a full merit scholarship, under the instruction of Thomas Stauffer.
Aside from the many hours she spends teaching at her own studio, Ms. Yan is a music instructor at the La Jolla Country Day School and cello section coach of Mira Mesa High School, Westview High School. She also coached Rancho Bernardo High School, Poway High School and the Children's Creative Performing Arts Academy San Diego for the past years.
Sam Johnson, String Bass Section Coach
Sam Johnson has a Bachelor's Degree in Music in Jazz and Studio Music (Performance) on Electric Bass from the University of Miami in Coral Gables
